News from our Toon reporter stationed in Holand: Alan Devon:

Still angry at the loss of former coach Fred Rutten to German heavyweights Schalke FC, news of the bungling ex-England coach's arrival has resulted in angry protests by local supporters.

Former manager Rutten became a hero last season after guiding Twente to a place in the Champions League qualifiers and many see the arrival of McClaren as a huge step backwards.

With some believing his initial snub once Mark Hughes left Blackburn as an insult.

Within days of Hughes' departure to Manchester City, McClaren, who had already agreed in principle to join Twente, informed the Twente board of directors that he wanted to apply for the vacant Blackburn role.

A move which has seemed to rile supporters of the Dutch club who already seemed less than impressed that he was even considered for the job in the first place.

Speaking to a group of supporters, many seemed to be completely puzzled as to what progress 47 year old McClaren could possibly make on former coach Rutten's excellent work. Johan van Nijmegan, a season ticket holder and self-confessed Twente Obsessive told me...

"It's hard to understand why we would want him (McClaren). Everyone here was expecting a high-profile manager after the success we had last season but McClaren is high-profile for all the wrong reasons.

"He won a cup at Middlesbrough but it wasn't the biggest cup in England and in the same season Middlesbrough almost got relegated, infact he was lucky by all accounts that in his time there he managed to avoid it because Middlesbrough were a poor side under him.'

"Many of us (fans) think that he has been appointed just because he was England's manager but whilst that may look good on his resume, a closer look will reveal he was actualy a complete failure and indeed is now a laughing stock in England.

"There are lots of great coaches available and the popular choice here was Henk Ten Cate who has recently left Chelsea. Ten Cate is a manager who could really improve on last seasons work but I'm doubtfull of what McClaren can do. And to use our club as a fall back option will do him no favours."

It would seem that Steve McClaren has some work to do to win over the fans and if he loses the battle to keep star player Orlando Engelaar at the club with Schalke FC and a host of other clubs in Europe keeping a close eye on the player, it would only make things worse.

McClaren is expected to target several English-based players including Everton misfit and former Dutch international Andy van der Meyde and Middlesbrough veteran George Boateng but fans of FC Twente are expecting much better than that.

Another player McClaren might try to sign is Egypt's star player and current Middlesbrough player Mido. The big striker has been linked with a move away from 'Boro for the past 2 seasons but it remains to be seen if he would be relishing the opportunity to re-join former boss McClaren.

McClaren is expected to appoint Dutchman, Eric ten Hag as his assistant.
