The Manchester United boss confirmed Simpson can become cup-tied by playing against Plymouth Argyle in Saturday's third-round tie at Home Park.
Simpson is out of contract in the summer and Ferguson has had talks with Newcastle and it seems a deal has been struck to allow the full-back to leave Old Trafford in next month's transfer window, with a permanent switch to St James' Park.
