Manchester United only managed to cut Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premiership by a point as they conceded a penalty and were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle.

On 49 minutes, Wayne Rooney blasted a free-kick into the wall before he fired the rebound into the area where Steven Taylor's attempted clearance bounced off Javier Hernandez into the goal.

Demba Ba levelled for Newcastle from the penalty spot after Rio Ferdinand conceded a penalty when he tackled Hatem Ben Arfa, only for the assistant referee to flag for a spot-kick.

Jonas Gutierrez was then sent off for his second bookable offence for a foul on Nani before Hernandez had an injury-time goal ruled out for offside as Newcastle held on for a hard-earned point.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men are now four points adrift of Manchester City, who play their game in hand against Liverpool on Sunday.

Chelsea eased to a comfortable 3-0 win against Wolves at Stamford Bridge in a much-needed win for Andre Villas-Boas.

John Terry headed the opening goal in the seventh minute from Juan Mata's corner before Daniel Sturridge struck the second and Mata added the third on the stroke of half-time.

The result leaves them nine points behind leaders City.

Tottenham beat West Brom 3-1 at The Hawthorns thanks to late goals by Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Baggies went in front when Youssouf Mulumbu headed past Brad Friedel in the 10th minute but Spurs levelled the score before half-time thanks to Adebayor's penalty.

Defoe put Spurs in front in the 80th minute before Adebayor added his second in injury time to seal the win.

In the teatime game, Arsenal were left frustrated as Fulham held out for a 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

Thomas Vermaelen netted an unfortunate own goal to gift the visitors - who had not won at Arsenal in 25 attempts - the lead on 65 minutes.

The Belgian redeemed himself when nodding in from close range with seven minutes left, but the hosts could not find a winner.

Elsewhere, Stoke piled more misery on struggling Blackburn with a comfortable 3-1 win at the Britannia Stadium.

Rory Delap gave the Potters the lead at half-time while Glenn Whelan added the second after the break. Peter Crouch capitalised on some lacklustre defending to make it three before Ruben Rochina pulled a late goal back for the visitors.

Wigan beat Sunderland 2-1 thanks to a last-gasp goal by Franco Di Santo. Jordi Gomez's penalty had put Wigan level after the Black Cats had taken the lead through Sebastian Larsson's close-range strike.

Wigan levelled when Victor Moses earned a controversial penalty after he was brought down by Larsson and Gomez powerfully converted before Di Santo snatched a much-needed win for Wigan in injury time.

Everton beat 10-man Bolton 2-0 at the Reebok Stadium thanks to second-half goals by Marouane Fellaini and Apostolos Vellios

Wanderers defender David Wheater was sent off for a studs-up foul on Diniyar Bilyaletdinov after 20 minutes and Everton finally made their one-man advantage pay Fellaini blasted high into the centre of goal before Vellios added the second in the 78th minute.

Norwich beat QPR 2-1 at Carrow Road after Luke Young cancelled out Russell Martin's opener before Grant Holt sealed the win.

Martin handed the Canaries the lead after a mistake from defender Anton Ferdinand allowed the defender to strike home from close range before Young levelled in the 59th minute. Substitute striker Holt then latched on to Wesley Hoolahan's cross to secure all three points.
