Newcastle United icon Micky Quinn says that the club must forget about making the risky signing of Leicester City’s Islam Slimani and swoop for Liverpool’s Danny Ings instead.

The Magpies have been linked with a whole host of transfer targets during the January window, especially a new striker, with the Northern Echo having claimed they have already been in touch with their Premier League rivals over a quartet of attacking stars.

Among the names stated were Leicester’s Slimani and Liverpool’s Ings, both of which have struggled to nail down a first team spot at their respective sides.

However, Quinn is not so certain on the abilities of the Algerian international, and has urged the club to make a move for the Reds’ fringe striker, who he feels would be the ideal forward for the type of football Rafael Benitez is implementing at St James’ Park.

In his column for the Chronicle, he said: “I’d go for Ings. I think Slimani would be a risk.

“When I first saw Slimani after he signed for Leicester, I was really impressed. He’s looked a shadow of that this season.

“Ings, meanwhile, is a player I like a lot. You could say it’s a risk signing a player who hasn’t played much football.

“I just think he is the type of player who would suit Rafa’s system and who is hungry to prove himself again. Ings runs the channels, works extremely hard to open up defences and makes a nuisance of himself.”

After recovering from two serious knee injuries which have kept him out of action for much of his Liverpool career, Ings has managed to make just three appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, with a total of 14 outings under his belt since arriving at Anfield.
