Glenn Roeder agrees with Bolton manager Sam Allardyce that it would be a shame if ex-Newcastle midfielder Gary Speed leaves the game when he retires from playing.

The 37-year-old Welsh midfielder, who celebrated a record 500th Premier League appearance on Saturday, is still undecided whether to take his 'A' licence, and Roeder says, "he is top class managerial material".

Allardyce said: "It is very important that the top players like Gary stay in the game. We need to build the next breed of British managers and I hope he carries on in coaching. Gary is experienced and loves the game. I would encourage him to learn all he can."
