Ex-Toon Midfielder Says Sunderland Are Not Safe Yet!

Although it was a 95% Newcastle United audience, neither would have a word said against the Mackems, each saying "we loved our time at both clubs".

Paul Bracewell is back in the north-east and he is looking forward to Sunday's cliff-hanger, but says the result is more important to Sunderland because they are not safe from relegation.

Paul Bracewell: "I think three weeks ago it looked like a relegation six-pointer but Newcastle are safe now and have done enough.

"But there is still something at stake for Sunderland. It all adds some spice to the game.

"Everybody knows that this is a massive game and you have to get a good result.

"If you don't, it puts the pressure back on and both sides are aware of that.

"Yet no matter where you are in the table, there is pride at stake.

"Yes you do hear people talking about formbooks and windows.

"But as a player, you ideally want to go into the game with confidence high and that comes with good form behind you. And with Newcastle on an unbeaten run and Sunderland losing at the weekend, it has an edge to it.

"The draw with Portsmouth puts Newcastle in good stead for the week ahead and they've been impressive in the last three weeks.

"I think it has helped Kevin get his feet back under the table again. Portsmouth are a good side and to go and get a result down there is a good start to the week for Newcastle.

"It's important to go into the week with confidence high. I've spoken to a lot of people lately about Kevin and as a player you know exactly what he's about.

"One thing that was the same for Newcastle the first time, as well as at Fulham and Man City - he gives the players a vision.

"Don't forget the players have changed and the club has changed, but he hasn't changed his style.

"The team is playing this 4-3-3 formation and Kevin will be wanting to finish the season as high as possible.

"I know there were people who had doubts when he came back. But Kevin instills confidence and he has turned it round in his favour.

"The three up front is exciting but it is well structured. You have players like Nicky Butt who know their job and give the team some protection."

Possibly the most controversial Tyne/Wear transfer ever. He wanted a two year contract, the Mackems only offered him one, and he joined Newcastle. But three years later he went back to Sunderland and they gave him a two year contract! Brilliant player who was part of the highly successful Everton side of the mid-1980s. Born in Heswall, was an England international. Career was almost ruined by a tackle with Newcastle striker Billy Whitehurst. Was out for a year but made a full recovery.
