Sanchez was appointed caretaker manager at Craven Cottage last month and has just one game remaining on his short-term contract, ending his 32-day spell at the club.

The 47-year-old says he hopes to make the position permanent but he wants to carry out the job alongside his Northern Ireland commitments.

He is tied to leading the province at next summer's European Championships should they qualify and IFA are convinced he will continue as coach.

Fulham secured a seventh successive season in the Premiership with Saturday's 1-0 victory over Liverpool.

Mohamed Al Fayed wants him on a full-time basis but that is looking very doubtful.

Much will depend on who is available with Ruud Gullitt strongly linked with a move to south-west London.

Gullitt is, of course, remembered for being the Newcastle manager who dropped Alan Shearer for the derby with Sunderland at St James' Park. Sunderland won 2-1, Duncan Ferguson kicked in the manager's door, and the Dutchman resigned soon afterwards.

Yep ... it's never quiet at St James' Park ... is it?
