The club's takeover saga developed a new twist after billionaire businessman and film mogul David emerged as an 11th-hour challenger to Ranson's bid to buy the cash-strapped Sky Blues, who are around £38million in debt.

Thursday is deadline day, when Coventry must either prove their solvency or enter administration and incur a 10-point deduction.

Elliott: "There is no deal with him - nothing.

"I spoke to him in a brief three to four-minute phone call yesterday morning and told him exactly where we are with Sisu, which is virtually a done deal. I have not heard any more from him."

Ray Ranson played 98 matches for Newcastle between 1988/93, and was rumoured at one time to be set to buy out Freddy Shepherd and Douglas Hall to take charge of Newcastle!

And Newcastle were not the only club either. He was linked with Aston Villa and Leeds United.

And if I was Coventry I wouldn't count the chickens just yet. He tends to blow a lot of hot air.

Ranson signed for Newcastle from Birmingham, having appeared in the FA Cup final with Man City. Didn't start too well and had the crowd on his back very early, but won them over without being spectacular.

One-footed, very much the "old school" type of full-back.
