Chelsea have replaced Mourinho with Israeli director of football Avram Grant, who will take charge of team affairs permanently with Scottish assistant Steve Clarke.

Clarke, who was also No.2 to Mourinho, is again a survivor of change but the backroom staff hired by Mourinho - Baltemar Brito, Rui Faria, head opposition scout Andre Villas and goalkeeping coach Silvino Louro - have also departed.

Clarke started his career at St Mirren, making 194 appearances, before joining Chelsea in 1986 for £400,000.

He spent 12 years as a player at Stamford Bridge, making 380 appearances, many of them as captain, before linking up with Ruud Gullitt as coach.

He followed Gullitt to St James' Park in 1999, before returning to Chelsea.
