Griffin started his career at Stoke before returning for two separate loan spells last season. And a permanent move to the Britannia Stadium appeared likely in the summer before Derby stepped in with the offer of Premier League football.

Griffin has made 15 appearances for the Rams since penning a three-year deal in July but is now deemed surplus to requirements by Jewell, who landed Danny Mills on loan earlier on Friday.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis, meanwhile, wants Griffin to fill the gap left by Stephen Wright's return to Sunderland and the club have now confirmed talks are ongoing with the 28-year-old.

It is understood Jewell would be willing to let Griffin join Stoke in a permanent deal if the Championship promotion hopefuls can match the defender's wage demands.
