Inter were held 2-2 in AS Roma’s Stadio Olimpico and lost Italian international Marco Materazzi with an ankle injury that makes him doubtful for the visit to St James’ Park.

Domenico Morfeo opened the scoring for Inter after 57 minutes, before Vincenzo Montella and Gabriel Batistuta gave the Roman side the lead.

But Turkish World Cup star Emre set up his compatriot Okan for an 89th minute equaliser.

Barcelona fared worse, losing 2-0 in Deportivo La Coruna’s Riazor Stadium, thanks to late goals from Lionel Scaloni and Alberto Luque.

Bayer Leverkusen also needed a late equaliser in their Bundesliga clash with Borussia Munchengladbach.

Daniel Bierofka opened the scoring for Bayer, before Igor Demo and Bernd Korzynietz gave the visitors the lead.

But Bierofka struck again in the 87th minute to give Leverkusen, who had earlier had Argentinian defender Diego Placente dismissed, a share of the points.
