England Win Could Be Bad News For Newcastle!

Rush only made 14 appearances for Newcastle between 1997/98, scoring two goals, and obviously we signed him too late in his career.

We suffered for refusing to pay Chester £100,000 when he was available after playing on Tyneside .... and Liverpool stepped in.

He scored a vital FA Cup goal against Everton that broke Denis Law's FA Cup record and took us into the semi-final of the competition.

That was about his total output. Should have had him 15 years earlier.

Rush has made a u-turn and now says: "I know it might sound strange coming from a Welshman, but I really am hoping that England make it through to Euro 2008.

"Firstly, it would be terrible if none of the home nations made it to the finals in Austria and Switzerland.

"But if England are celebrating at the end of their game with Croatia tomorrow night, I think it would be really good news for Liverpool.

"Both Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch will play in the Croatia game and if they are part of a big success story it will give them a major boost ahead of Liverpool's tricky trip to Newcastle at the weekend.

"Footballers thrive on confidence and if you are part of something good it can give you a lift that can carry over for several weeks.

"Back in 1993 I was playing for Wales and we needed to beat Romania at home to qualify for the World Cup in America the following year.

"If we'd won it would have been the first time that Wales had got through to the World Cup finals since 1958 so the whole country was desperate for us to succeed.

"But we ended up getting beat 2-1 having missed a penalty when it was 1-1 and that was one of my lowest moments in football.

"It was that bad that it took me around three or four weeks to get it out of my system and my club form really suffered as a result.

"So I will be rooting for England tomorrow night because I know if they win it will be great for Liverpool."
