Kieron Dyer has endured a miserable start to the season following the recurrence of the hamstring problems which have dogged him throughout his career. However, Graeme Souness will bring Dyer off the bench at Grimsby in tonight's Carling Cup third-round tie confident a period of rest and recuperation will provide the platform for a return to the player's best form.
Graeme Souness: "Kieron is back in the squad and we are hoping he will get at least 30 minutes at Blundell Park. Nobby Solano is still very stiff and sore after Sunday's game, but we are hopeful he will get another hour under his belt, allowing Kieron to come on for half an hour.
"We will obviously be guided by what our medical staff tell us, but they say he is fine, he is running well and the injury is okay. We have done everything by the book and sought all kinds of opinions about why it keeps recurring.
"Kieron has been to see Hans Muller-Wohlfahrt in Munich and another specialist in Nottingham and they believe they have got to the root of the problem. We have done everything we can do for Kieron and we have left nothing to chance. We feel we have got to the bottom of it but ultimately only time will tell.
"We believe it is connected with his back and his nerves and maybe trying to do manipulation and exercises which haven't necessarily helped. Nobody ever catches him in training so we are not worried about Kieron taking a tackle. It is when he is sprinting that there is concern. The tackling part of a match he can handle very well."
