Dyer handed captain’s armband

He explained that he believed Dyer was ready for the responsibility and that he would respond to it by raising his game.

"I will make Kieron Dyer my captain," Sir Bobby told a press conference.

"I think the captaincy makes him a bit more responsible when it comes to his defensive duties, knowing that he is leading the side, so I think it is quite a good choice.

"He is possibly a captain of the future but we are just giving him a trial. But he responds to being captain, I will tell you that, he likes it.

"We will be fielding a very young team. They are all ploughing together and they must all play their part. They all have a fair amount of experience but we are, of course, missing two old heads in Alan Shearer and Gary Speed."
