Dyer - I left my shooting boots at home

"I left my shooting boots at home. I missed an open goal and Peter Schmeichel made a couple of good saves," he said after the match.

"I was probably thinking of celebrating before putting the ball in the back of the net. But in the end I think we could have nicked a point or maybe even three.

"Still there are no excuses - we weren't at the races for the first 25-30 minutes.

"In the second half I thought we were the better team with the same formation but all credit to Manchester City - I think they'll do really well this season.''

A first half effort from Darren Huckerby was enough to give Kevin Keegan managed Manchester City all three points in yesterday's match.

After the match Toon manager Sir Bobby Robson refused to rise to the bait and blame Dyer for the defeat, stating that his missed chances were just "one of them things."

"Jimmy Greaves missed thousands, but he also scored thousands," he stated in a blatant case of over-exageratting a point.
