Wales face Serbia in Cardiff meaning Paul Dummett could come up against Mitrovic at international level on November 12.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it.

“Mitro has been in good form and I’m sure the manager (Chris Coleman) will be asking me about him when I join up with Wales!”

Dummett feels that Newcastle United’s competition for places is at its best level in years at St James’ Park.

The full-back, who has been in and around the first team since the 2012 season, feels that the fact Rafa Benitez could leave Dwight Gayle on the bench summed up how fierce the battle for starting XI spots are these days.

In days gone by, it’s difficult to have believed Newcastle could have left out somebody with 11 goals to their name by November.

Dummett told the Chronicle: “I think the competition for places is there for all to see.

“Mitro started the game and Dwight Gayle was on the bench.

“That shows the strength in depth we have now.

“Last season the team almost picked itself and when people were fit they just walked back into the team.”

Newcastle put in a perfect first half performance and went in at the break 2-0 up against Cardiff.

But the Welsh side hit back in the second half and came close to nicking a point.

Dummett reflected: “We did well in the first half but we know can improve on the second.

“Maybe we took our foot off the gas.

“But it’s great to win again and take that run to eight matches.

“We can go off for the international break in good spirits and look forward to the Leeds game when we come back.”
