The fullback only returned to Tyneside in the last few days, having played in St Mirren's 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock on Wednesday.
He forced his way into Alan Pardew's thinking and was put on the bench at Brighton, coming on at the break in the 2-0 loss.
Pardew is expected to block an attempt for him to return to Saints on loan this month.
