Chris Waddle wore it with pride, as did United Reserve team coach Tommy Craig before him. Terry Hibbitt, Alan Foggon and perhaps the greatest of them all, Bobby Mitchell in the cup winning years. And Duff wants to do what Mitchell did and pick up a cup for the Geordie faithful, and Mitchell did it THREE times.

Duff: "There was a great finish to the season last year under Glenn Roeder. It would be great to be challenging for trophies - hopefully a cup this year.

"We obviously need a few new players, but it's all set up for success. Winning a trophy here would be a dream come true - it would be unbelievable.

"Obviously it's not going to be a Premier League trophy this year, but I think the fans will be happy when we start going back in the right direction.

"They're special fans - the best fans in England. And I'm more excited now than when I signed for Chelsea - the passion's just ridiculous up here. Football's a religion, and it's mine too so I feel as though we'll get on well."
