Duff has had unkind things to say about his "Hell on Tyneside" in recent weeks, saying he is showing the kind of form he never produced in a black and white shirt.

He obviously dreams of glory in Europe tonight, but there is an amazing twist that could see relegated Burnley in line for a Europa League place next season via the Fair Play League.

The highest placed club in the Premier League's Fair Play table who do not qualify for Europe are set to win a place in the Europa League.

The latest standings show Arsenal top followed by Tottenham, Fulham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Burnley.

If Fulham win this season's Europa Cup they would be invited back as holders, leaving Burnley in pole position for an unexpected place in Europe.

Should Fulham not win the final in Hamburg next month they could be back next season via the Fair Play table.

With the second leg of their Europa League semi-final against Hamburg coming up tonight, Fulham’s - and indeed Roy Hodgson’ - finest hour could be yet to come.

Damien Duff return to prominence at Fulham has been every bit as impressive as Danny Murphy’s was last season.

Roy Hodgson appears to have a handy knack of reviving flagging careers and Duff, who was part of a relegated Newcastle United side last season, appeared to have his best days firmly behind him before coming to Craven Cottage.

Given that his pace has all but deserted him,Duff has come back with renewed purpose and influence and he has weighed in with some crucial goals this season.
