In a bizarre situation, Sam Allardyce was invited to Spain to try and coax the defender to Tyneside with the blessing of the Sevilla president.

Sam went - offered the dosh and a chance for the player to play in the Premiership - then the president offered the player a four year deal!

The Newcastle manager is looking elsewhere and is not now expecting to make a signing in the imminent future, but he says will be happy to get in another defender by the time the transfer window closes on August 31.

Some questioned why Sam was going for 31-year-old full-back, but the Toon boss insisted he was up to the job.

Newcastle United: "We were a bit taken back by Dragutinovic's demands.

"If we had given him what he was asking for, it would have made him the highest paid player at St James' Park.

"We are not prepared to meet his demands."

Dragutinovic wanted more than the £103,000 per week Michael Owen picks up!
