Defeat At Villa Would Cost Ashley £50m!

That is the estimated cost of the drop for a club which, just six years ago, reached the second group stage of the Champions League.

Former billionaire Ashley - whose personal fortune has been drastically reduced by the credit crunch - saw the hope of survival washed away by a demoralising 1-0 home defeat by Fulham yesterday.

The defeat put the Magpies back in the bottom three and heading for the Championship if they cannot take a last chance to save themselves.

Their challenge is now black and white - they must better Hull's result against Manchester United on Sunday.

Alan Shearer: "I always thought it was going to go to the last game, and that's been proved right.

"It will be a nervous affair. It will be a long afternoon next Sunday.

"I am still confident. It is difficult - it is out of our hands again.

"We have to better what Hull do, but we will give it a go.

"Alex, when he has been in that position, has always put out a side that does his club proud, so whoever he puts out, Man United are that professional so they will go out and try to win that game.

"I have not got any problems with that."
