Ashley’s Sports Direct is to target over- priced gyms with a chain of budget outlets where monthly memberships start from a fiver.
Sports Direct has just acquired 30 sites from LA Fitness.
The chain says it will “revolutionise the market” for fitness clubs.
Members would simply have to pay a £10 joining fee, followed by £5 a month.
Its first purpose-built site will be in Aintree, near Liverpool, with another in Keighley, West Yorkshire.
Sports Direct spokesman (talking to the Chronicle): “Our gym memberships will offer fantastic value for money in the same way that our customers have come to expect from our retail outlets and our website.
“This will be affordable fitness on an unprecedented scale. It will revolutionise the market by making private gym membership a realistic lifestyle choice for millions of people.”
