The 20-year-old completed a five-month loan move to the Ricoh Arena Championship side Newcastle United on transfer deadline day after being spotted in the stands during Tuesday’s 4-2 win over West Ham’s Under-23s in the newly revamped EFL Trophy.

Sterry, who plays predominantly at right fullback, began his career in the Northeast and progressed through Newcastle’s academy system before signing his first professional contract in July last year.

He is widely regarded as one for the future at Newcastle having already made his Premier League debut as a second half substitute during the 5-1 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur back in May.

The 5ft 11′ defender featured for Toon in their recent EFL Cup victory against Cheltenham Town, playing 90 minutes, as the Magpies ran out 2-0 winners.

“I’m pleased to add another defender to the ranks as we welcome Jamie Sterry to the club,” said City boss Mowbray.

“We’ve got a good relationship with Newcastle United and Jamie is the latest player we’ve taken from the North East to strengthen our squad.

“He is only 20, but is a young talent with plenty of promise and will provide healthy competition in the wing-back position for us. Jamie made his debut for Newcastle in the Premier League last season and I’m sure he will be a valuable addition to our squad for this campaign.”
