Cort has managed just 21 league appearances and scored seven goals since his £6million transfer from Wimbledon just over two years ago.
His Newcastle career has been dogged by a string of serious injuries and there were signs earlier in the season that Sir Bobby’s patience was running out, when he described Cort as being behind both Lomana Lua Lua and Shola Ameobi in the first team reckoning.
Should the story prove to be true, Sir Bobby will be keen to sign a replacement as soon as possible, because currently we are over reliant on Alan Shearer and an injury to him would prove catastrophic.
