Coloccini is hoping his elevation to the Newcastle captaincy will help him regain his place in the Argentina squad.

The Toon defender, 29, has 34 full caps but has not played for Argentina for two years and missed out on the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Fabricio Coloccini: “One of my goals for this season is to get back into the Argentine national squad. I will be trying everything I can to do that.

"I train hard every day to improve my game and hopefully the people back home in Argentina will see that.

“The national team are always on my mind.

"Playing for them is the best thing you can achieve. ”
