More good news for Chris Hughton, Steven Taylor and Danny Simpson are also expected to return over the weekend, and all three are in the frame for Monday night's game against Sheffield United.
Hughton will be without the suspended Zurab Khizanishvili, who was sent off in Newcastle's win over Doncaster Rovers last Saturday.
Hughton: "Coloccini trained yesterday, so unless he breaks down, we're confident he'll be fit.
"We're building up Steven Taylor this week, and we're very hopeful he'll play on Monday, and also Danny Simpson.
"Realistically, we'll be looking at Saturday (with Taylor). He's been doing some very good work, and, hopefully, he'll join in with the group.
"Danny hasn't trained, but, of course, he's been involved in the games at Scunthorpe and Forest, so his fitness isn't an issue. We're hoping he'll be training on Saturday."
