But surely Joe Hart is the man for the job.

As Brian Clough used to say: "You don't win a thing with a dodgy goalkeeper", which was why he broke the bank to get Peter Shilton.

And England boss Fabio Capello cannot possibly go with the unreliable Rob Green, who dropped another major clanger yesterday.

Nigel Clough: "He has been steady when we have needed him, Stephen. He has been very, very consistent and steady this season.

"We have mentioned in the past about a possible World Cup in the summer depending on other injuries and so on because he is English, he is fit and he is playing, and there are not too many English goalkeepers doing that at the moment.

"He looked calm and composed and his handling was extremely clean from crosses and things, hence we got the clean sheet."

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish: "His form has been brilliant, and let's face it, he is looking a big, powerful bloke between those sticks right now.

"He has improved since he came to us. He probably had it there anyway, but we have probably brought out the potential.

"Joe has as good a chance as anybody else to certainly be in the England squad.

"I know that Fabio Capello and his staff like him, so he already has an edge, and his recent performances have certainly shown he can be a candidate."
