Clarky’s words of consolation

It is now almost six years since he inexplicably left for Sunderland and while many feel that he has failed to live up to his full potential, one thing that has never been in doubt is his passion for Newcastle United.

"Newcastle's season has been fantastic," said Clarky, who has obviously worked on his finishing since leaving St James’ Park.

"They were in the title race right up to the wire and obviously the last few games have just knocked the stuffing out of them.

"But that doesn't take away the fact that they have got one of the best young squads in the country that will get better season by season as they gain more experience.

"They have been absolutely superb in the Champions League this season against some of the best teams in Europe so they've been tremendous. That third spot is the least they deserve.

"Newcastle's special, everyone knows that. The club is special to me, I grew up there and was at the club from the age of 10 - for more than 15 years.

"That is where I was born and bred and that's the team I've supported all my life. But at the end of the day I am a professional footballer and I'm playing for Fulham, and I've had a great time here.

"The supporters have been brilliant with me so I always want to give my best for them, which meant giving 100 per cent against Newcastle. Hopefully though, they can go on and win their remaining games."
