Civil War Over Townsend?

Andros Townsend is the footballer who almost caused a civil war within Newcastle United.

Rafa Benitez openly courted Townsend throughout the entire January transfer window, but the club wasn’t able to secure any deal, loan or permanent.

But Townsend, it appears, remains on Rafa’s wanted list for the summer.

Well now, there’s a thing.

The little winger quit United because he wished to remain in the Premier League and signed for Crystal Palace.

Fast forward 12 months and Townsend could be leaving Palace because he desires to play in the Premier League and joining Newcastle.

Oh, the sweet irony!

It could happen exactly that way with Palace currently in a relegation position and United top of the Championship.

If it does the whole amazing scenario will also have claimed two casualties, both of whom managed the Mags.

Alan Pardew signed Townsend and was then sacked earlier this season for putting “my beloved Palace” in danger of the drop.

His replacement Sam Allardyce would of course surrender his proud record of never having been relegated if Palace feel the hangman’s noose.

It all goes to prove that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence, as Townsend obviously believed.

The move has gone pear-shaped for him personally as he has failed to figure permanently in Palace’s team.

Would he have been better off staying like Jonjo Shelvey, Vurnon Anita, Yoan Gouffran, Jack Colback and Paul Dummett and fighting the good fight to right a wrong of their own doing?
