Sky Bet Championship leaders Newcastle United could be braced for an £8 million bid from top-flight giants Chelsea in the summer for goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
The 26-year-old has solidified his spot in the starting eleven but manager Rafa Benitez doesn’t see him as a long-term number one on Tyneside.
Newcastle are hoping, if they do gain promotion to the Premier League, that out-on-loan ‘keeper Tim Krul or summer arrival Mats Sels will be able to make the step up as first-choice man between the posts.
Darlow has made 21 appearances for the Magpies this season, most recently in the weekend’s narrow victory over Derby County.
The former Nottingham Forest man signed a deal with Newcastle United in January 2014, but alongside Jamaal Lascelles, spent the rest of the 2014/15 campaign on loan at Forest.
Benitez’s third option in goal, Rob Elliot, has struggled to get game time at the club following his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which he sustained back in March.

FAT FRED POINTS FINGER AT "GREEDY" RAFA!
Freddy Shepherd - the chairman who sacked Sir Bobby Robson all those years ago - has branded Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez ‘greedy’ for kicking off about the lack of January transfers at St James’ Park.
Reports this week have claimed the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is considering his future in charge in Tyneside after the club failed to land any of his targets this winter.
But former chairman Shepherd has backed under-fire Mike Ashley and believes he made the right call in January.
Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White, Shepherd insisted Benitez’s current team should be good enough to seal a return to the top flight, and that the Spaniard will have plenty of money to spend in the summer if he steers the Magpies back to the Premier League.
“I think Mike is obviously saving his money for the summer because I think Newcastle will definitely get up," he said.
“That team is not the best in the world, but it certainly should get up to the Premier League.
“Like any other manager, Benitez is greedy - he’s greedy for players and money to buy players, and I think that’s really the bottom line.”
Asked if he meant greedy in a good way, Shepherd added: “Yes, of course.
“Every manager wants another player and that’s why I think Benitez is having a little moan because he didn’t get what he wanted.
“The thing about managers, they all throw their toys out of the pram when they don’t get what they want, and Benitez is no different.
“But I think they will get promoted and I think Benitez will get a fair amount of money in the summer to buy players if he’s still there.”
