The 68-year old, known locally as "Chelsea Bill", blamed his latest arrest on Toon supporters, who he had been drinking with in Newcastle that same day.
Police were called when he caused disruption in the Subway sandwich shop on North Road. But he has previously been banned from six Subway shops in Newcastle alone.
He told police: "The Newcastle fans get me drunk, then take me to the nearest Subway, lift me on the counter and get me to sing Chelsea songs. I don't mean any harm, they just encourage me."
Kev Fletcher, leader of the Newcastle fans' group "Lets Give Ashley A Good Kick In The Balls" said: "He's loveable, you can't help but like him, he just has a thing about Subways.
"But they never seem to make them right. Sometimes they give him a free one just to get him out of the shop.
"He is a bit of a legend, and sometimes there can be as many as 50 Toon fans cheering him on.
"He hasn't been well lately, and his ambition is to get to Stamford Bridge for the Newcastle match in February. We've told him if he dies before it we will dig him up and take his coffin into the ground.
"We asked Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich if we could prop up the coffin in his executive box, and we got a reply saying 'He's not DEAD yet you daft Geordie bastards!'
"Which we took to be encouraging."
We asked Roman Abramovich to comment. All he would say is: "If he's dead by February we will consider it, depends on the smell."
Chiek Babayaro, manager of Subway in the Haymarket said: "Chelsea Bill? He's a f***ing pain in the arse!"
