Canaries Stuff Pedro's Magpies

Newcastle United Under-23s let a half-time lead slip, as they lost 2-1 on home turf to Norwich City.

A Luke Charman strike had put Peter Beardsley's men on the road to their second win at Benton in a week, but two second-half Canaries crackers ensured it was City who went home with all three points in the Premier League 2 clash.

Beardsley was again able to call upon the services of Matz Sels between the sticks, with Under-18 keeper Nathan Harker on the bench.

Massadio Haidara, who starred in last week's Premier League Cup victory over Southampton, was unavailable this time out, instead youngster Victor Fernandez was thrown in from the off.

Newcastle dominated the opening 45 with Haris Vuckic looking lively and Fernandez's pace on the left causing the visiting Canaries all kind of problem on the break.

It took until the 34th minute, though, for the young Magpies to open the scoring.

Charman netted his third in just an hour of football at this level, following on from his match-winning double last week against Southampton, by tucking in from close range after Aston Oxborough had palmed clear a low effort from Spaniard Fernandez.

As poor as the visitors were in the opening 45 they were much improved in the second.

And they were level on 57 minutes when Diallang Jaiyesimi tucked home at the back post unmarked after an error by United defender Michael Newberry.

City went 2-1 up just five minutes later when Ebou Adams cracked home from the edge of the area, to put the Canaries deservedly in front.

And that was the way it stayed despite Beardsley throwing on former Hartlepool United loanee Tom Heardman and turning to a more direct style of play.
