Campbell In Tune With The Toon!

By Nu Mad
Thursday, 29th July 2010
Sol Campbell is not like the other former Arsenal/England defender who arrived at St James' Park in a blaze of glory. Kenny Sansom came in 1988 - played 24 games - and we couldn't wait to get rid of him!

Sansom came for a big-money pay-off, and made his debut at Hillsborough on Boxing Day 1988 in a 2-1 win.

He did look decent that day, it has to be said, but it was all down hill after that.

He said he couldn't settle, he missed London, and he wasn't used to the freezing cold that blew off the North Sea and cut over the Gallowgate End like a knife through butter.

Sol Campbell: "I couldn't have wished for a better move.

"To join Newcastle United, with its proud tradition and magnificent support, is tremendous for me. I'd like to thank Chris for putting his faith in me.

"I aim to repay him and the supporters by giving everything I can to help re-establish this great club in the top-tier of English football.

"I just want to play, and can't wait to get started. There's a real buzz about the place, and that's great.

"I've played at St James's Park numerous times, and I've always found it a fantastic place to play.

"There's always a tremendous atmosphere."
