Campbell Doubters Should Look At At The Defence

Do we have what it takes to stay in the Premiership?

As regards "success" we seem to be well short - as for the "heart" of the team - I fear there too.

Steve Harper, let's be honest, is average. Every other clubs seems to have an international goalkeeper - we don't.

In the centre of defence we don't have a player who has been a success in this league (Fabricio Coloccini, Danny Simpson, Tamas Kadar and Mike Williamson) and Steven Taylor is out for three months.

Heart of midfield - probably the strongest position we have because Kevin Nolan, Alan Smith and Joey Barton have the ability.

Upfront, Shola Ameobi and Andy Carroll? Your guess is as good as mine.

But bringing in Sol Campbell is one a step in the right direction, trust me.

Chris Hughton has not got the funds of others. He's had to plead with Mike Ashley to get what he has brought in already, and once again we are looking in the 'bargain bin'.

But Campbell is class. Yes he is 35 and past his best, but none of our defenders have been a major success in the Premiership - he has.

Jose Enrique and Fabricio Coloccini struggled two years ago, and we can only hope they have learnt from it.

Steven Taylor is expected to be sidelined for the first three months of the new season. The 24-year-old has undergone surgery after dislocating his left shoulder in a pre-season friendly at Carlisle on July 17.

The signing of Sol Campbell is all the more timely. The veteran former England international is on a one-year deal after leaving Arsenal as a free agent, and we NEED him.
