Caldwell out for tactical reasons

Many people were surprised to find Caldwell absent when the teams were announced last night, after a string of good performances by the young Scot.

But Sir Bobby confirmed: "I left Steve out purely for tactical reasons and nothing else.

"He has never let us down since he came back into the side but because of the way I knew Liverpool would line up we did not need his type of player.

"I felt that we did not need a tall central defender to combat anything in the air but I knew that Andy O'Brien and Aaron Hughes could cope with the sort of players Milan Baros and El Hadji Diouf are and I think our tactics paid off."

Caldwell is still waiting to find out if he will be offered a new contract by the club for next season.
