The former Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest boss had opted to stay at St James’s Park.

Instead he has accepted the offer of a contract until the end of the season at St James' Park, with the option for another year, should the club stay up.

Was it his undying love for the Geordies that made up his mind ... or the fact the Newcastle contract has more "£ signs" on it than the one offered by Rovers?

Calderwood joined the club in January and has already worked under three managers – Hughton, Joe Kinnear and Alan Shearer.

Although it has to be said, Shearer wasn't too impressed by him and brought in Iain Dowie to assist him.

How times have changed for Calderwood, because had Shearer been made the club’s permanent manager – Calderwood would have moved on.
