The Brazilian has emerged as an alternative option to Jonathan Woodgate, who joined Tottenham yesterday.

Newcastle have offered the defender a three-year contract as they try and beat the transfer deadline.

Alvaro: "I will pass the medical tests today and, if everything goes well, I will sign my new contract with Newcastle.

"I am very pleased with the opportunity to play in England.

"At other times, offers from The Premier League came up but were never finalised.

"Newcastle are an historic club and I am going to work to help them do everything they can.

"I know that they are not doing well in the table but, in both the last two years, I have been fighting with Levante to stay up so I am used to battling."
