dIs there any logic there?

Alan Pardew: “We haven’t got the Europa League campaign. I think that should give everyone a boost.

“I spoke to (Arsenal’s) staff – they’d seen us on the Sunday after Thursday games, and they said there was definitely an energy lacking in the team.

“For us, the squad wasn’t big enough – we’ve already said that – but next year it’s just about getting the right two or three (signings) that’s going to take us forward.

“In defeat, it was a great day in terms of how the fans were to us.

“We’re very lucky to him them. We mentioned that in the dressing room after the game.

“There was 52,000. I said to them even if we’d gone down, there’d be 52,000.

“We’ve got to serve up better than what we’ve served up this year. That’ll be the reaction and response we need.

“I just want to thank them personally for their support, especially in terms of how performances have been, particularly under pressure towards the end.

“Secondly, that in terms of the team it’s obvious we need to respond to the season we’ve had."
