Boro After Toon Striker!

Smith was a £6 million signing from Manchester United last summer, but has had a disappointing campaign and looks a shadow of the player who was 'goal machine' at Elland Road in his Leeds days.

Smith failed to score in 34 appearances for the Magpies this season, but he argues most of those games have seen him play out of position.

Sam Allardyce played the England international in every midfield position during his short stay at St James' Park, and none seemed to suit.

England boss Steve McClaren took stick for picking him when he was obviously out of form, and we all know what happened to the 'Wally with the Brolly'!

Middlesbrough were interested in signing Smith last summer before he opted for a move to Tyneside.

Smith's agent: "There were a lot of clubs interested in Alan but whether clubs are or aren't interested in Alan it doesn't matter. Alan is happy where he is.

"Talk of his future is between Alan and Kevin.

"What Alan's looking forward to now is a good break and coming back fresh next season.

"Alan's not looking for a move and he's happy to stay at Newcastle."

But Boro will be checking him out ... and that is a fact ... not a rumour.
