Bobby hails 'exceptional' Milner

"It's a good move, he's come to a good team and a big club. He's a young boy, only 18, but we've bought a very good player who we hope will have a long future at the club.

"I think he's an exceptional player for his age and that he will become an important player, not just in the future but now.

"We've bought a player with a long future but he has enough quality to force his way into the team and make an impact straight away."

Robson sees Milner as competition for both Darren Ambrose at right wing, but also Laurent Robert on the left. However the Frenchman has vowed to get back to his very best form next season. In a meeting with Sir Bobby, Robert, who had been linked with moves away from the Toon, assured the Magpies boss of his desire to do better this term.

Fellow left sider Olivier Bernard commented "
Everybody knows Laurent by now. When he plays to his best then he's probably the best winger in England - but he can probably be the worst sometimes too!

"He's had a word with the staff in pre-season and he's ready to play his best football. I hope for both him and the team that it happens. He's determined to play a big part. Everybody knows he can do it and we'll all be happy if he turns out to be player of the season."

To be fair, I'm not sure whether 'Laurent Robert' and 'determined' should be in the same sentence. Voice your opinions on the messageboard.
