Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce, still biting his nails waiting for a "yes/no" answer from Michael Owen about his future on Tyneside, quizzed the Anfield club last week about signing Bellamy should Owen move on.

£9m is maybe what the player is valued at, but just like Owen's contract, you have to look at the small print tucked away ... somewhere near the back.

Should Owen go to Liverpool, expect Bellars travelling in the opposite direction, but Blackburn could make a move.

Blackburn chairman John Williams insists it is only natural Bellamy is being linked with a return to the club.

The Wales captain appears to have fallen out of favour after less than a year at Liverpool, the striker (who turns 28 next month) was a huge success at Ewood Park, scoring 17 goals in the 2005-06 season.

While refusing to reveal whether the striker is on manager Mark Hughes' shopping list, Williams said: "I've no idea if Liverpool want to sell him.

"His name is on everyone's lips because he did very well here. It's an open secret we would like another striker at the club."

Signed from Coventry City in the summer of 2001 for £6m, one year after Bobby Robson tried to sign him from Norwich. Striker who went through a terrible time at Highfield Road, and blamed for Coventry's relegation. But his first season at SJP was remarkable. His injury towards the close of 2001/2 cost United a crack at the title. Made headlines on the front of the newspapers as well as the back for incidents including rascial abuse. Then of course there was the physical battle on the training ground as soon as Graeme Souness arrived at SJP. Souness tried to sell him to Birmingham but he turned it down at the last moment and went on loan to Celtic. Sold to Blackburn Rovers in July 2005 for £5m plus add-ons.
