Brian Honour admitted he was "shocked" to see Danny Wilson leave Victoria Park yesterday, but believes Beardsley, who finished his playing career at Pools, could be the man to take the vacant job.

Honour: "Peter Beardsley has played at the very top level, including European championships and World Cup semi-finals.

"He's done some coaching and worked at Newcastle United.

"It's a couple of years since I spoke to him, but I know he's got the desire to get into management.

"I know for certain he's got a massive affection for the club.

"I think he's shown a bit of interest in the job in the past, and I'd like to see him given a crack.

"All sorts of names will come up, and I expect to see Ian Holloway mentioned, even Alan Shearer.

"If he is going to start in the Football League and work his way up very much like Paul Ince has, he couldn't pick a better starting point.

"Pools is a fantastic club to take over. The whole place has changed beyond recognition from the days I was playing for Pools.

"It's a cracking set-up, with a good reputation, nice facilities, nice stadium and can attract good players."
