Beardsley Backs Toon Campaign!

Beardsley, who represented his country at the 1986 finals in Mexico and was part of the side under Sir Bobby Robson which lost out to West Germany in an agonising semi-final penalty shoot-out in Italy four years later.

Peter Beardsley: "I have to be honest, the players probably didn't feel the same because when you are a player, you always think there's another chance.

"Obviously we were disappointed, but I think it was worse for Sir Bobby because he knew it was his last World Cup and because of that, he was disappointed.

"He is not great in health at the moment, but he loves this city, he loves this part of the world and is very proud to be from here and it would be incredible [to host the World Cup in Newcastle]."
