Joey Barton has had exploratory surgery on the foot injury which has kept him out of Newcastle United's last three games.

The midfielder is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Chris Hughton: "Joey had an exploratory operation yesterday, and the injury could keep him out for a good period of time."
