Barton himself wants to stay, but his indiscipline and wages mean he will almost certainly leave once the transfer window reopens.

Sam Allardyce - who signed Barton for Newcastle for £5.8m two years ago - is understood to be weighing up a move for the 26-year-old, whose career on Tyneside has been blighted by injury and controversy.

Allardyce made Barton his No 1 target when he took over at United, but the Liverpudlian's wages - understood to be around £60,000-a-week - would be an obstacle to a move to Ewood Park.
