Barton finished up on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline against a Rangers team which included Magpies old boy Amdy Faye and former Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu.
It was the midfielder's third appearance for the club in little more than a week, after two outings for the reserves, as he continues his fight for match-fitness after recovering from a fractured metatarsal.
He will now almost certainly be involved in the Premier League clash with Tottenham on October 22.
