Barton has been forced to miss the first two months of the season after breaking his foot in a pre-season friendly against Carlisle in July.

But the 25-year-old will play a part against Spurs, if not from the start, he will be sub.

Sam Allardyce: "I signed Joey because he is an elite Premiership midfielder and there are not many of them around.

"He will score goals from midfield and he protect the defence as well, he brings a complete package to the side and that will be a big boost to us. He is good passer of the ball, he is a strong tackler and he brings combativeness off the ball.

"We have signed a top midfielder with his best years ahead of him. He knows he's got to control his behaviour on and off the pitch, but I'm confident he will do that.

"I think he was top goalscorer at Manchester City for the last two seasons and that is something remarkable for a midfielder.

"Joey played for 90 minutes this week and that's great news. He'll get another game in next week and hopefully another 90 minutes and then we'll see about the Tottenham game. That's a realistic target for him now.

"We'll monitor his fitness levels and see how much he has improved in the days since the Everton game, but he's got a good chance of playing against Tottenham. I doubt he'll be ready to start the game, but we're looking to put him in the squad."
