Barton Not A 'One Hit Wonder'!

Yes ... one cap ... and one cap alone.

Will Barton get a recall? I think it goes without saying his day will come, whether it's under Steve McClaren or someone else.

And the way it is looking, it will be under "someone else".

Barton's timing was not to Michael Owen's liking when the ex-Manchester City midfielder told the media "my priority is club first - country second", just when Big Sam was trying to stop Owen (who was injured and not playing for Newcastle) joining the England camp.

I'm not saying it caused friction between the two players, but Owen was not amused.

After building up a bad-boy reputation at Manchester City and openly criticising England internationals still playing for the team, it was suggested that Barton would never play for his country. But he did. That one game was against Spain earlier this year.

Another "One Hit Wonder" with a Toon connection is Steve Guppy.

He once cascaded down the flanks for Newcastle ... then Leicester City and Celtic ... but Guppy never quite fulfilled his potential despite enjoying an extended career that brought him to eleven different clubs.

After winning one cap for the England U-21's and one for the B team, it seemed to be a natural progression that he only got one for the senior side in 2000.
