Chris Hughton: “We’re all aware of what the suspension was for, it’s one he has to take on the chin.

"It’s frustrating being out through a ban, it’s perhaps more frustrating than with injuries, and he’s itching to get back.

“Did I feel let down? As with anybody who gets banned, he’s done something that was silly and, of course, with the cameras we have in today’s game, you can’t get away with it.

“As soon as he did it he realised what he had done and accepted it. It’s a reaction thing that some will do and Joey did. He did something he very much regretted very quickly afterwards. He’s apologised and he has to learn from it.

“He’s been one of our best players this season, I think that is fair to say.

"He hasn’t spent enough time on the pitch in the last couple of years, he’s had a couple of injuries that have stopped him playing the amount of football he would have wanted to play.

"Getting him on the pitch as much as we can, he’s a big asset.

“The club is very much aware of when player contracts are up. We are conscious of when José and Joey’s contracts are up.

“It is risky to let them run them down and the ideal situation is to secure the players at the club for a long period, as we have done this week with Nile and Mike, but some situations are easier than others.

"I haven’t spoken to Joey about it at all yet.”
