Barnwell insists that Roeder should have to get the Pro License before he is even considered. The Premiership can allow Roeder become Newcastle manager by 'fast-tracking' him past the license, but Barnwell is adamant that he should have to qualify like other managers.

Barnwell: "Glenn Roeder is one of the anomalies because he hasn't got a Pro License. He can be Newcastle manager if The Premiership allow it, but they won't.

"There is no fast-track to the qualification and why should there be? If there was, all of those people who went through the courses would be asking why they weren't fast-tracked.

"Even if Newcastle didn't qualify for Europe, I don't believe The Premiership would allow his appointment."

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce has also been quoted as saying that Roeder should not be allowed to make his caretaker role at St James' Park a permanent one. But the caretaker manager has side-stepped a war of words with the man who once favourite for the job.

Roeder: "Like everyone else, Sam is entitled to his opinion.

"But he has had a good season so far with Bolton and I hope he has another good time at the Reebok next season."

Is that a way of saying "you keep your job mate ... I've got the Toon job!"?
